文藝復興系列演講期末報告
前言
西方的文藝復興時期是文化史上的黃金時代,隨著地理大發現、人類的佔有慾與與天生的好奇心將航海技術和科學知識推向一個新的局面,政治雖不再屈服於宗教,但兩者的關係更形複雜。此時的醫藥與各類科學雖比中世紀進步,但在理論與執行層面卻發展出不同學說的雛型。文藝復興時期,社會變動快速、不穩定,而人們也無法定位自己,相對於前一階段的中古世紀時期重視神學、虔誠的宗教的文學寫作,這個時代的人們更加強調人的情感、個性的解放、肯定個人價值。此時期的文學作品中充分體現人文主義思想,擺脫教會對人的束縛,展現出更多的情感。在文藝復興的大時代裡才華洋溢的人得以受到貴族的青睞,但是文藝復興時代裡的女性卻沒有如此幸運。文藝復興時期的全人教育、宮廷及通俗文化在西方的文化史上不容忽視,外文系系列演講將邀請專家就文藝復興時期的醫學、政治、性別認同做不同的歷史探討。為提升本校外文系學生對文藝復興時代的了解,本計劃主持人王儀君老師針對此計劃做出七場演講規劃,以下是97年文藝復興系列演講期末成果敘述。
第一場
第一場演講請到在戲劇、劇場史、表演理論、文學理論與批評方面有深入研究蘇子中教授來為我們演講,蘇子中教授任教於台灣師範大學英文系,此次蘇子中教授的演講題目是:〈An Uncanny Melancholia: The Frame, the Gaze, and the Representation of Melancholia in Albrecht Dürer’s Engraving Melencolia I〉

The primary focus here is on the uncanny nature of melancholia in Dürer’s Melancholia I; also explored will be the question of “the melancholy Other” and “the ecstasy of the signs of melancholia.”

第二場次演講請到在國立高雄大學西洋語文學系任教的鄭月婷教授來為我們演講。
鄭月婷教授的專業領域文藝復興時期文學,此次演講題目是:殺妻與造巫:《艾德蒙頓的女巫》中之社會病態(Wife Murder and Witch-Making: Social Illnesses in The Witch of Edmonton)。

第三場次請到中正大學外國語文學系暨研究所王明月副教授演講,王教授之專業領域為中世紀文化研究、英國文藝復興文學、文學理論與批評,此次演講題目為:Shakespeare’s Hamlet as a Foul Disease。
演講摘要:
In the talk, I will focus on the imagery of contamination in Hamlet. Shakespeare’s Hamlet is well-known as a melancholic, but I am more interested in his role as a contagious disease. I would argue that Shakespeare’s Hamlet takes on a role more like a rampant virus than a melancholic, infects and inflicts people around him until at last no one left survived. Our task is to trace the details of the new concept of the plague in Hamlet and then look at the way those details intersected with the medical practices and customs that attended the ideas of contagion in Shakespeare’s time.

演講題目為:The Dark Side of London: Social Evils in Renaissance England 。
演講摘要:
This study aims to juxtapose the images presented by those place names and the portrayal of them in literary works so as to represent London in its darkest and murkiest dimension: a city full of social evils.

第六場次請到本校人文中心短期傑出訪問學學者Vivienne Westbrook教授演講,
Westbrook教授之專業領域為文藝復興時期研究、莎士比亞研究、聖經等,此次演講題目為:Moving Images and Memorialization: Shakespeare’s Histories on Film。
演講摘要:
“Life without memory is no life at all, just as intelligence without the possibility of expression is not really intelligence. Our memory is our coherence, our reason, our feeling, even our action. Without it, we are nothing.” (Bunuel, My Last Breath)
Luis Bunuel wrote his autobiography My Last Breath as he was nearing the end of a lifetime spent in filmmaking. This book is as much a revelation of the processes of a creative mind, and its relationship to history and memory as it is about the processes of film-making itself.
In recent years I have become increasingly fascinated by the technologies of remembering, of how societies remember and why they choose to memorialize some things and not others. In this lecture I want us to think about how film contributes to the ways in which society remembers, and for the purpose of illustration I will be referring to adaptations of Shakespeare’s Henry V.

第七場次請到本校人文中心短期傑出訪問學學者Lim Chee Seng教授(馬來西亞大
學外文系)演講,Lim教授之專業領域為莎士比亞和文藝復興時期文學、英詩、後殖民時期文學等,此次演講題目為:Shakespeare in the Tropics。
演講摘要:
The lecture will discuss the business of professing Shakespeare from tropical locations such as Kuala Lumpur and Kaohsiung by exploring the connections of the plays of Shakespeare with the Tropics and particularly with Malaysia, which is my permanent location. I will touch on the earliest connections from the early seventeenth century down to those in the present moment of globalization. The lecture will refer especially to George Lamming as a precursor of the postcolonial discourse in "The Pleasures of Exile" and his obsessive engagement with The Tempest. The play will be seen in the context of postcolonial readings and redactions. The lecture will proceed to emphasize the Shakespearean quality of "endless perspectivising" as perhaps the most valuable benefit to be drawn from a study of Shakespeare in our world made dangerous by the opposing fundamentalisms at the beginning of the twentieth-first century.
