座談主題:The Case for Impeachment
座談內容概要:
American democracy has become perhaps fatally damaged over time by some inherent flaws, most notably a two-party system that prevents the rise of third parties, and which, over time, has led to a devaluing of ideology in favor of personality, and a consequent loss of civic involvement by the electorate.
The other related flaw is the increasingly important role of money in the political system. As political ideology shrinks in importance in elections and in political life, and personality takes over, the importance of image, and thus of media, grows, and with it, the importance of money as a means of presenting that image. This growth of money in politics diminishes the power of the individual, and has created a vicious circle” of cynicism and diminished interest on the part of American citizens, who don’t see their vote as having any real influence on the course of government—hence the appallingly low turnout figures in national elections (50% for president, 35% for Congress, and low teens for local elections).
Faced with this grim picture, the U.S. is ripe for a demagogue who can stir up passions in order to cease power in a way that could eventually undo a two-century experiment in democracy.
