課程內容可概分為「華人文學」、「外國文學」二大部分。本課程由二位授課教師分別負責「華人文學」、「外國文學」之教授,而將重點放在近現代中外作家之主題介紹上。本課程採取「主題式單元教學」,將每學期課程內容依若干單元主題設計,依主題選擇題材,有系統介紹「現代中外文學」具代表性的作家與作品,同時也將時代與議題,和作家其人其事在作品中的書寫反映,加以釐清與凸顯,以培養學生鑑賞文學作品的能力。本課程提倡「生活的文學,文學的生命」,希望能喚醒學生生活裏的文學情操,掌握自我的生命特質,欣賞文學創作中的人文與情味,進而涵養人文傳統,培育文藝素養。

「外國文學」:
•Course Description:
Through the media of movie, this course will address modern literature in the twentieth century up to now, containing works by writers like E. M. Foster (1879-1970), Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), Michael Ondaatje (1943-), Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) and Ted Hughes (1930-1998). Film adaptation of the writers’ work or relating to their stories include: A Passage to India, Hours, The English Patient and Sylvia. The class will be structured by film watching and discussion sections.

Course Requirements:
•The students are expected to attend the course regularly and to give their own opinions in the discussion sections. Also they are required to join the discussion in the blog.
Assignments
•Assignments will include two essays. The due time of the assignment will be announced in class. Late work will not be accepted and marked.
The Final
The students will form a team about 8-10 persons to work on a specific writer. The results of their work should be presented orally in class on the set date. The items included in their oral report are:
1.The life description of the writer
2.The important works by the writer, including the plot summaries, the major themes
3.Personal critics of and reflection on the writer and his works
Grading:
•The final grade will be determined by: (1) attendance (10%), (2) blog discussion (20%), (3) essays (30%), and 4) the final report (40%)
